Geocache Description:

A simple one-stage multi. Visit the start and find a Leopard Tank that has now retired to Canberra. On it you will find a 5 digit number – abcde – adding up to 23. GZ is not far away at:
S35 18.(A+B)(Ex3)(A+E+E) – checksum = 38
E149 07.(A+C)(B)(A+D+E) – checksum = 46

This is a 42-tonne, 2.7m-high Leopard tank which has been placed to provide the backdrop for the recently burnt out but, soon to be rebuilt Manuka RSL Club.

The massive battle tank is the last of 71 redundant Australian Army Leopards to be delivered to RSL and services clubs around the country. It was installed on a specially prepared reinforced concrete pad in early November 2012.

Leopard tanks first arrived in Australia from Germany in 1976. This ended a selection and trial process which started in 1971 when the army decided it needed a replacement for its British Centurions which had served since 1952.
In March 2004, the decision was made to replace the Leopard 1 with reconditioned US Abrams tanks.
The Leopard 1 was operated by the 1st Armoured Regiment and was officially withdrawn from service in July 2007. Their guns were never fired in ager.

The tank was refurbished at Bandiana and now sports a fresh coat of paint. While the secondary armament - two 7.62mm machine guns - have been removed, the main gun is still in place.
