A great riverside hike or snowshoe on a technical old-school Whistler bike trail.
I’ve found my share of uninspired caches; with this in mind I’ve held off on hiding one until I was relatively sure I could place one in a spot worth visiting (subjective, I know), and close enough to be easy to maintain. Hopefully this will be the first of several in the area. This “should” be available summer and winter.
Cachers from the area will likely already be familiar with the bike trail Trash, which gets it’s name from the fact that the area was used as the waste transfer station for the resort of Whistler up until the Olympic Village was built. Visitors should know that this trail is about 2.5-3 kms (1-2 miles) long, and although there is no major elevation gain or loss, the trail is quite technical in places. When you need to devote all your attention to where you’re putting your feet while walking (or snowshoeing), it makes you appreciate the folks that can ride that stuff. It makes a great hike as well.
The trail travels along the banks of the Cheakamus River for most of its length, and crosses through diverse landscapes, with many spots to view rapids and waterfalls. This trail is kid & dog friendly, although owners should keep their animals (or kids) away from the fast moving waters. Contents are kid-friendly exchange items. Please trade up. The cache is not hidden near the water.
The best route to the cache is by following the trails, not bushwhacking straight to it. This is the point of this hide, to give people a reason to visit this great trail, from end to end. If you decide to rough it, don’t blame me if you end up knee deep in mud. Summertime cachers should watch out for cyclists. Winter cachers will likely have the trail to themselves. This trail does see winter traffic, although even when familiar with the trail, it can be very difficult to follow, especially after fresh snow. You can’t get too lost though, as you will always be between the river and the Olympic village. If any knows how to add a GPS track to a cache page, let me know and I’ll upload it. In the meantime, this is the best map I could find of the area:

Trash is in pink. Start on the Sea to Sky trail (blue), follow it until the westernmost intersection with Trash, turn right and you’re on your way. The Sea to Sky trail makes a good quick exit for those that cache & dash or are tight on time.
As always, we are in bear country so no food items, no smelly lip balms or sunscreens or lollipops or scratch-n-sniff stickers or blue cheese or any other stuff that might entice a bruin.
Parking is best found near the HI hostel, which has a nice coffee shop in it as well.
Winter cachers, please be careful how far down you replace the cache. It's home is tight, and it has a tendency to freeze in there...
