Geocache Description:

This is the sixth and last hide in the series. You have come to the end of the East Goulburn main channel.

If you travel the Goulburn Valley highway just near Wahring service station (North Nagambie), you will have noticed that you pass over a large channel. This channel carries irrigation water from the Nagambie Lake to this point. This channel is 95 kilometers long, but of course the water itself has come a long way further than that, as it has come unaided( No pumping, only fed by gravity) from the Eildon weir , which is also fed from rivers and creeks from as far away as Mount Buller, Jamieson and beyond. A remarkable feat, as when all this irrigation design was being done there was no such thing as GPS or laser levels. Some of the earthworks further upstream of Invergordon were done with horses.
When this channel was first installed the water that entered the creek below this point was considered overflow water, the aim for the people in charge of the channel system was not to waste the water. But today a certain amount of water has to flow into the creek for environmental flows. The gates you can see across the channel further upstream are controlled remotely from Tatura some 70 kilometers away. These along with the removal of all the old Dethridge wheels that measured the amount of water entering our farms , and replacing them with new water measuring devices have been funded in part by the Federal and State Governments.

If you have been doing our caches in order, or you have already done Cache5 you will note that we mentioned to measure how far children had to walk to school. Just north of this site was where a family was living in a humpy. The children would walk to the Younamite North school and back a very good effort don’t you think! Please note the distance in the log please
You are looking for a 150ml container,
