Geocache Description:

This cache is located in Memorial park at Marungi. Today we mourn the loss of soldiers lost in battle in Afghanistan, but have you ever wondered what our country would be like if all of our fallen soldiers had never lost their lives.

As you drive through this vast country of ours, you will pass through many towns and cities great and small. If you go to the Returned Soldiers website you are able to follow a link to all of the memorials erected to honour our fallen through war, there is too many to count. People hurry through the small spot on the map that is called Marungi. There are no signs to say that you are passing into or out of this town. Cars, trucks and buses are heading Northwards towards NSW or heading South to Shepparton and beyond.
Once there was a state school here. It opened on 6th of April 1880, State School 2236 was established in a one-room weatherboard building sited on the Yarrawonga Rd, 12 miles S/E of Numurkah township to serve the families of selectors in the area. Initial enrolment was 60 pupils under John West with his wife acting as S M (sewing mistress), the West family residing in a log cabin nearby. Closer settlement, irrigation and motor transport combined to close the school in 1957, the pupils being transported to Katandra West
We would like you to think of the fallen men and women as you do this cache .You will firstly pass through the Memorial Gates erected in honour of those who fought in the 2nd World War, as far as I can tell no citizens from Marungi lost their lives in this war. You will now be heading to the large memorial in the centre of the park. This was erected in memory of those that died in the 1st World war. Recently a Lone Pine has been planted.
Sadly the tennis club also no longer exists, as can be seen by the size of the trees growing in the court. No tennis has been played on the court for many years, all that remains is the fence and the posts that held up the nets.
