Geocache Description:

GZ is located in a layby entrance near Public footpath sign off the busy A541 road. Please exercise caution.
Look for a very Large Tree. We think it's a Sycamore or a Maple family variety. Its Trunk Girth is approx. 5.5M
Once at the tree conduct a hand search for the cache; located above ground level. You do not need to climb the tree. A park and grab.

The Caches in this series are inspired by Ancient Tree Hunt (ATH) which involves thousands of people in finding and mapping all the fat, old trees across the UK and is right at the heart of the Woodland Trust’s ancient tree conservation work. It will create a comprehensive living database of ancient trees and it’s the first step towards cherishing and caring for them.
Ancient trees are living relics of incredible age that inspire in us feelings of awe and mystery. They have helped shape our history, and will help shape our future if we let them.
An ancient tree is one that makes you go ‘wow, it’s huge! It will usually be really fat, but probably not that tall, as like old people they tend to shrink down with age.
Like people, trees grow and age at different rates depending on where they are and what happens to them during their lifetime.
Over the centuries, Ancient Trees have inspired artists, writers, poets and scientists and are mentioned in sacred texts.
The term ‘ancient tree’ encompasses:
• Trees of interest biologically, aesthetically or culturally because of their great age
• Trees in the ancient or third and final stage of their life
• Trees that are the old relative to others of the same species
