Hingham Roadstone
. In the 1890's the Federal Government and the State began systematically marking and recording the boundaries of all the towns in the Commonwealth. The original survey also set many marks along the town boundary lines at road crossings. These roadstones acted as location guides to the Town Corners. One could follow a bearing for a specified distance to reach the Corner. This very simple three stage multi will take you over such a path.
As you enter the parking lot, notice the slim gray granite monument on the right. This is Cohasset-Hingham Corner 4 and a benchmark (MY4146). Check it out, notice the cut letters on the granite faces. Head downhill to stage 1, use the coordinates to reach stage two and then the cache. Nearby is a Hingham Roadstone.
Continue on to find other caches nearby, or return the way you came and walk again the path the surveyors did many years ago. Back at the Town Corner, place your GPSr on the monument and check your accuracy against the published data. The adjusted position is extremely accurate.
