The History: The Garden State Parkway (GSP) is a 172.4-mile limited-access toll parkway that stretches the length of New Jersey from the New York line at Montvale, New Jersey, to Cape May at New Jersey's southernmost tip. The Parkway was constructed between 1946 and 1957 to connect suburban northern New Jersey with resort areas along the Atlantic coast and to alleviate traffic on traditional north–south routes. Its name refers to New Jersey's nickname, the "Garden State." The Parkway's official, but unsigned, designation is Route 444. In Middlesex County, in the township of Old Bridge, the GSP passes through Cheesequake State Park at exit 120.
