Giant Eastern Cape Cycad (7) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

iPajero: The Buffalo Trail is situated in the beautiful Umtiza forest and we have had the enjoyment of walking it on many occasions. Unfortunately the authorities stopped maintaining the trail and for the past fifteen years we have spent many days clearing and keeping it in a hike able condition. We also arranged four CITO's where many teams helped with chain saws and brush cutters for 8 to 9 hours and our thanks goes to them. Unfortunately due to our age we are unable to continue with trail clearing and the caches along the trial have not attracted any cachers over the past five years. Very reluctantly and sadly we have decided to archive these caches but as the saying goes, ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END.

Geocache Description:

One of the many beautiful cycads seen along the Buffalo trail in the Umtiza Nature Reserve.

This popular ornamental species has a tall, stout stem, topped with a dense, upright crown of bright-green palm-like leaves up to 2.5 metres in length. Although woody in appearance, the stem is mostly comprised of soft, pithy storage tissue protected by a solid layer of old leaf bases. Initially, the single stem is erect, but over time it usually begins to recline at an angle, and may sucker from the base to form a clump of multiple stems. The sexes are borne on separate plants, as indicated at reproductive maturity by the presence of two to five male or female cones on each stem. The large, yellowish green female cones are egg-shaped, almost resembling a pineapple, while the similarly coloured, but smaller, male cones are cylindrical.
