Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden just outside upper Riddell State Park. The park is located off exit 17 of I-88, east of Oneonta. Riddell State park is divided by I-88. You want to be on the south side of the interstate. Parking coordinates are N42 28.832 W074 58.126.

You will be following a well marked trail that leads to Mud Lake. Follow the signs. There are many mucky spots along the way so you may want to wear some sort of boot. However it’s not difficult to walk around the wet spots. There are also two other caches hidden along the trail. For some, the only drawback of this cache is the hike. It’s more than a mile one way. The two treasures you will find at GZ are definitely worth it. One is in the cache. The other is the scenic waterfall.

You are searching for a large plastic bottle. Inside are many glass bottles, with the inside of each coated with silver. Really! Pure silver! First to find has a choice of bottles. There are five green glass Coke bottles. Two are commemorative bottles from 2008 to honor the closing of the original Yankee Stadium. A one-of-a-kind Christmas gift for your rabid Yankee fan! (OK, so they’re two-of-a-kind!) The other three are limited edition retro Coke bottles. Also there is one Corona beer bottle for those who prefer to get hammered. For all other late-comers there are many smaller silver bottles. Please feel free to take one. You do not need to trade anything!

If you’re interested in the science behind your bottle swag it’s called the Tollen’s reaction or Tollen’s test. It is used to differentiate an unknown aldehyde from a ketone. An aldehyde is blah, blah, blah, while a ketone is blah, blah, blah. The reaction causes silver nitrate to be reduced to elemental silver … blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah … if it’s an aldehyde a silver mirror is produced on the inside of the reaction vessel, if it’s a ketone no reaction is observed. Anyway it’s complicated, but you end up with a beautiful silver bottle. So get your hiking boots on and go get one!
