Geocache Description:

NOTE: IF YOU CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO SIGN THE LOG, DON'T CLAIM THE FIND! Half the challenge in this series of caches is retrieving the log.

The Jose Ruiz Community Center on South Ann Street in Fells Point is home to Education-Based Latino Outreach (EBLO), an organization dedicated to supporting the growing Latino population of Baltimore.

In the past twenty years, East Baltimore's Hispanic population has exploded, and now these relative newcomers are bringing new businesses, food, music, and traditions to the area.

From Fells Point to Bayview, Hispanic-owned and operated shops, panaderias, cantinas, taquerias, nightclubs, churches, and community centers like EBLO and the nearby Esperanza Center are popping up all over.

People from across Latin America are now calling Baltimore home. Don't call them "Mexicans." Not everyone who speaks Spanish is Mexican. There are Hondurans, Salvadorans, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Columbians, Peruvians -- and Mexicans -- represented in this neighborhood.

Like many other immigrant groups who long ago assimilated into American culture, Latinos are settling into East Baltimore and adding their own particular flavor to the city.

EBLO is always looking for volunteers. Would you like to be an English tutor or work with children in an after-school program? Stop by the center and sign up!

You are looking for a nano-sized cache. As Ann is a busy street, please exercise some stealth. Replace the cache carefully so that it doesn't fall out of reach. Note that you will need a special tool to retrieve the log from the cache. GZ and the cache itself are both handicap accessible.

This cache is part of a series called "Coming to Baltimore" that highlights places of historical or cultural significance to groups that settled in Southeastern Baltimore County and East Baltimore, including the Native Americans, English, Irish, African-Americans, Jews, Italians, Greeks, and Hispanics.

This series is the by-product of a semester-long project that my ENGL101 students completed this semester. They had to conduct research into each of these groups and identify these historic sites. Thanks goes to the CCBC Geocachers for assisting with placement of the series.
