Cache number 18 inspired by a list of 100 must-read novels I discovered last year. It is not necessary to have read the book to find the cache. There is something about the location that makes me think of the novel.
When Jerome K. Jerome wrote “Three Men In A Boat” in 1889, he initially intended it to be a travel guide to boating on the Thames. He wrote it in novel form and as the narrator claims he has read a medical textbook and self-diagnosed 107 ailments (for some reason, he does not have housemaid’s knee). Together with two friends and his dog, he decides to cure himself by taking a leisurely, two week-long river trip. The book holds the often quoted or paraphrased: “It always does seem to me that I am doing more work than I should. It is not that I object to the work, mind you; I like work; it fascinates me. I can sit and look at it for hours.”
The comic anecdotes disrupt the travelog, which earned the work criticism early. By 1909, when the second edition was published, the comic aspects drew many fans, who were critical of the serious 'travel guide' passages, which interrupted the comedy.
As you seek this cache, just imagine J., Harris, George and Montmorency (the dog)trying to navigate this 'river'!
Congratulations to Dancer69 for the FTF!
