Las Canteras – Earth Cache



Un caché geológico que te forma y te da una lección sobre geología.
Aprende sober esta playa y disfruta sobre lo que aprendes y ves.



Las coordenadas mostradas al inicio de la página te llevarán a un Panel Informativo, uno de los dos que tendrás que visitar para poder responder correctamente todas las preguntas y poder así registrar tu visita en este cache geológico..

Gran Canaria es una de las 13 islas que forman el Archipielago Español, y la segunda mas grande de ellas..

Los caches geológicos deben ser educativos y dar una lección sobre geología..

Por lo tanto me gustaría compartir algunos conocimientos geológicos, información sobre esta playa y como se forman..

La playa a la que te voy a llevar es una playa sedimentaria, lo que significa que esta formada por partículas depositadas las cuales han sido transportadas por el viento y las olas. Es un continuo proceso de formación y erosión..

Los sedimentos son arrastrados al mar por los rios que desembocan en él y portan materiales erosionados como arena, grava, barro y otros restos. Estas particulas se disuelven en el agua del mar y después son transportadas por la acción de las olas que las depositan paulatinamente en las costas formando las playas..

En la arena se pueden encontrar distintos materiales, como el cuarzo y otras sustancias del carbono que provienen de restos de crustaceos y otros animales. Además, como ésta es una isla volcánica, hay también basalto..
Si miramos atentamente la arena puede que tengas suerte y encuentres pequeños fosiles atrapados en ella, lo cual demuestra el origen marino de Las Canteras..
En el pasado, el mar depositaba la arena (sedimentos) en la playa para continuar su camino natural en tierra, desplazándolas desde Las Canteras a Las Alcaravaneras, formando un campo de dunas que se extendía a lo largo del Parque de San Telmo..

Las grandes playas en pendiente son aquellas donde la accion de las olas y condiciones del mar son relativamente tranquilas (olas constructivas) y los sedimentos (arena) son bastante gruesos. Estas playas son conocidas como playas reflectivas..
La playa situada en frente de estos paneles informativos es de esta naturaleza y se encuentra protegida por un arrecife natural de piedra caliza. Hace miles de años, la playa que tienen delante era el lugar donde el arrecife de piedra se encuentra hoy en dia..
Las playas reflectivas son generalmente más seguras para los nadadores debido a sus aguas tranquilas..

Además en la playa, a la izquierda mirando al mar, hay un area clasificada como playa disipativa. Aqui las olas son mucho más fuertes (destructivas) y las olas rompen fuera de la costa, por lo que pierden su energía mientras se desplazan.
Estos tipos de playas tienen generalmente arena caracterizada por un grano más grande y por lo tanto más grueso.
A estas playas también con conocidas como “Zonas de Surf” y se debe tener cuidado al nadar en ellas, de hecho muchas de estas zonas tienen restricciones para los bañistas, para evitar así un potencial peligro a la gente, en concreto que los niños sean arrastrados mar adentro por la fuerte corriente.

Los granos de arena son, por lo general, finos o de tamaño medio, los geólogos miden las partículas para determinarlo. Las partículas de arena tienen un diametro desde 0.0625 mm (o ?16 mm, o 62.5 µm) a 2 mm. Los granos de dimensiones más grandes empiezan a ser considerados dentro de la categoría de grava.

El arrecife que puedes ver desde aquí es una defensa natural que protege la playa. Si no fuera por él, la arena desaparecería por la acción de las olas y el mar.

El agua dulce que llegó a la playa original desde el barranco de La Ballena endureció y compacto la arena gradualmente, formando la roca (arrecife) que podemos ver hoy en día..

Para registrarse en el cache tienes que visitar primero las coordenadas mostradas en la parte superior de la página, seguido de los puntos adicionales y enviar las preguntas y requerimientos a las preguntas que figuran a continuación a través del sistema de mensajería de mi perfil en esta web.:

1. En las coordenadas del panel de información: El nombre de la playa siempre ha estado siempre relacionado al arrecife. Cual era el antiguo nombre de la playa y porque se llamaba asi?

2. En el panel informativo: que había donde ahora esta el arrecife y hace cuanto tiempo?

3. Explica brevemente como se forman las playas.

4. Calcula aproximadamente la distancia desde el panel informativo hasta donde estaba la playa.

5. Usando tu GPS, cual es la elevación en el panel informativo?

6. Ve al punto 2. Un viaje interrumpido, en este panel informativo, explica la diferencia entre la trayectoria de la corriente actual y la de la anterior, y que ha causado este cambio.

7. Es opcional pero seria genial si pudieras tomar una foto de ti con tu GPS mostrando las espectaculares vistas que hay ahí (por favor, no descubras información importante de los paneles informativos).

The co-ordinates at the top of the page will take you to an Information Board, one of two that you will need to visit to be able to answer all the questions and be able to log this Earth Cache.

Gran Canaria is one of 13 islands making up the Spanish Archipelago - it is the 2nd largest of the islands.

Earth Caches need to be educational and also provide an Earth Science Lesson.

Therefore I would like to share some Geological knowledge and information about this beach and how beaches are formed.

This beach where I am taking you too is a sedimentary beach this means it is formed by depositing of particles which have been transported by wind and waves - it is a continual process of creation and erosion.

Sediment is swept into the sea from rivers that run into it and bring eroded materials such as sand, gravel, mud and other debris – these particles are generally suspended in sea water and then transported by the action of waves breaking along the shore and depositing the sediment there, creating the beach.

There are some existing materials in the sand – these are quartz and other carbonated substances which come from the skeletal remains of shellfish and other animals. In addition to these, as this island is a volcanic island, there will be some basalt too.
If we look carefully at the sand you may be lucky enough to find some small fossils trapped in the sand which demonstrates the marine origin of La Canteras.
In the past, the sea would deposit the sand (sediment) on the beach for it to continue on its natural drift path on land, moving from Las Canteras to Las Alcaravaneras, forming a dune field that stretched as far as Parque San Telmo .

Long sloping beaches are ones where the wave action and sea conditions are relatively calm (constructive waves) and the sediment (sand) deposits become fairly thick. These beaches are known as reflective beaches.
The beach immediately in front of these Information Boards is of this nature and is protected by a natural limestone barrier reef. Thousands of years ago, the beach in front of you was where the stone barrier is today.
Reflective beaches are generally safer for swimmers due to their calmer waters.

Further along the beach, facing the sea and to the left there is an area classed as a dissipative beach – this is where the waves are much stronger (distructive) and the waves break offshore and lose their energy as they travel.
These types of beaches generally have sand where the characteristics are that the grains of sand are larger and therefore coarser.
These beach areas are also often called ‘Surf Zones’ and care must be taken if planning to swim – in fact many of these zones have restrictions in place to stop swimmers and to avoid the potential hazard of people, in particular children being swept away with the strong current.

Sand grains are generally fine or medium and geologists measure the particles to define their size – sand particles range in diameter from 0.0625 mm (or ?16 mm, or 62.5 µm) to 2 mm. Grains of higher dimensions than this start moving into the category of gravel.

The barrier reef that you can see from here is a natural defence that protects the beach. If it were not for it the power of the sea and the waves would make the sand disappear.

The fresh water that reached the original beach from the gorge of La Ballena gradually hardened and compacted the sand, forming the rock (barrier reef) that we can see before us today.

2. From the information board - what used to be where the reef is now and how long ago?

3. Briefly explain how beaches are formed.

4. Estimate the distance from the information board to where the beach used to be.

5. Using your GPS, what is the elevation at this information board?
6. Go to Stage 2 Waypoint - An Interrupted Journey - from this information board, explain to me the difference between the Current Drift path and the Former Drift Path and what has caused this to change.

7. It is optional but would be welcome and good if you could take a picture of you and/your your GPS to show the spectacular views here (please no spoilers of the notice boards).
