Geocache Description:

This bison tube is hidden next to the footpath from Whitehaven to St Bees on the 'Colourful Coast'. There is no climbing or scrambling involved.

The nearby Saltom Pit was the worlds first undersea coal mine, sunk in 1729. It lead the way in mining technology and innovation, helping put Whitehaven on the map, but only the ruins of the winding-engine house remain. Saltom Pit is a scheduled Ancient Monument, protected by law because it is so important, but the secluded little bay is surrounded by unstable ground where there is frequent movement in the cliff margins so please take great care if you decide to take a closer look. On a clear day, the Isle of Man, Ireland and Scotland are clearly visible and the colours of the spectacular sunsets are so vivid because the air, locally, is so clean. Hidden with kind permission of The National Trust.
