Geocache Description:

Room for small trackables and coins, BYOP

Scientific name is Pinus Sabiniana. Seeds are gathered from this seed tree for propagation. Close by you will see some seedlings growing. Some of the seedlings will be planted at the historic Fort Lane, just a short walk from this tree.

This "ghostly" tree was once called "Digger Pine", named for the Native American people of Central California who were known as diggers and they felt it to be a derogatory name. Out of respect for them it was renamed Gray Pine.

Over the years the Gray Pine has been known as the "Ghostly Pine" for its gray-ish wispy needles. At certain times of the day it can look quite ghostly. When the tree sets its cones, one needs to be aware of them falling. They are very large and can be quite painful if you get hit with one!
