Geocache Description:

Searching for this cache will bring you to several interesting areas. Have fun!

This is an environmentally friendly multicache setup. The cache setup did not require writing coordinates or placing tags at any waypoint. Instead, the phantom waypoints given here together with info derived from observations at waypoints will provide info to each new waypoint. Therefore, you will not be absolutely sure you have followed instructions correctly until you find the cache.

Phantom Coordinates:

  • A N44 46.567 W75 10.875
  • B N45 12.453 W75 43.214
  • C N45 18.519 W75 49.418
  • D N45 12.465 W75 43.413

Magnetic Variation: W14 degrees.

The starting coords (Waypoint 1) are N45 22.699 W75 46.777. There you will find 2 benches with a garbage container nearby. Count the number of vertical wooden slats that ORIGINALLY made up the container. You can do this easily by counting the number of slats on one side, then multiplying by 4. Pick a side that has all 8 remaining slats still attached. After doing the math you should have a total number of slats that number between 31 and 33. Add 4 to that number, then add this number of minutes to each of the N and W coords of Phantom Waypoint A. The result will give you the coords for Waypoint 2.

At Waypoint 2 you will find 2 benches. Count the number of horizontal wooden slats for one bench. If you get 2 different numbers, use the lower one. Add this number of minutes to each of the N and W coords of Phantom Waypoint B.
The result will give you the coords for Waypoint 3. A compass bearing from Waypoint 2 of 352 degrees magnetic points to a manmade object. If it's a hazy day, don't worry about it.

At Waypoint 3 you will find one bench with a large rock to the left of it. Count the number of horizontal timbers which make up this bench. Add this number of minutes to each of the N and W coords of Phantom Waypoint C. The result will give you the coords for Waypoint 4.
A compass bearing from Waypoint 3 of 62 degrees magnetic points to the same object as seen at Waypoint 2. Incidentally, if you can see it, what is the object?

Waypoint 4 is a large dead upright tree trunk (with a small rope attached near the top).

Using only your GPS, calculate the distance from Waypoint 4 (the tree trunk) to the distant object. Use the bearings given above from Waypoint 2 (352 degrees magnetic) and Waypoint 3 (62 degrees magnetic). Round up the calculated distance to the nearest whole number of kilometres.

Add this number of minutes to each of the N and W coords of Phantom Waypoint D. The result will give you the coords for the cache. Warning: a porcupine lives nearby. To calculate the distance, first use the method described in the hint for the DOUBLE CROSS cache (GC364C) to locate the distant object. Cache is a plastic bucket (Nov 2020).
