Marylands Walk #3 - Plumberow Mount
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
The third in a series of three caches to help you explore Marylands woods, nature reserve, and Plumberow Mount with views over the river Crouch to Brandy Hole and South Woodham Ferrers.
This walk can be VERY muddy and slippery - wellies are strongly advised.
Well done to Lennyemmy and PuReWaRRioR69 for a well deserved FTF on this one.
3/3
From cache 2 follow the edge of the field to the waypoint.
You can see the River Crouch and beyond, Brandy Hole, and slightly to the left, South Woodham Ferrers. You may also be able to see a retired RNLI lifeboat which is sometimes used for seal watching tours on the river crouch.
Turn right onto Plumberow Mount, a neolithic barrow. This was a burial mound which was excavated in 1913, by Mr. E. B. Francis. At the time, there was a summer house on the top of the mound, and so trenches were cut on three sides. The excavation found a Roman coin of Domitian and some Saxon pottery which may indicate a secondary burial. The oval mound is 14 feet (4.3 m) high, and 76 feet (23 m) in diameter, with a flattened top, where the summerhouse was located.
The cache is a small plastic box.
Contents: Spotty logbook, Badges, water pistol, toy coin and Isabel TB.
