Geocache Description:

The »Strada Napoleonica« (officially »Strada Vicentina«) was built by Napoleon's troops. The road winds through 3,7 kilometers of the Carsian high plain (about 250 to 350 meters above sea level) from the village of Opicina to Prosecco. It is mostly frequented by the walkers of Trieste, runners and bikers, while climbers try to conquer the gravity at the beginning of the road at Prosecco. Trieste has a very long Rock climbing history. Generations of climbers, like famous Emilio Comici, have left their mark for others to enjoy and test their skills. The cache has the same name as one of the most popular routes in the nearby crags (which you will pass on your way).
The path is easy to follow, and offers spectacular views over the Gulf of Trieste, Trieste itself, the Miramare castle, and also Slovenian coast, and the Foce dell' Isonzo natural park (visit link) as well. At the Opicina side of the road there is also a white obelisk which was erected by Trieste's Merchant Corp in 1830 in honor of the visit of the Austrian Emperor Franz I. Once You visit the obelisk, take a ride with the Tranvia di Trieste (visit link) an over a hundered years old tramway leading from Opicina to the center of Trieste. The area of Strada Vicentina was put into order by the Giulian Alpine society and dedicated to the climber Nicolo Cobolli in 1935. It is sheltered from the bora (a cold NE wind) and is often bathed in the sun making it a sunny island in the winter months. The walk, combined with an excursion to Trieste with the tramway makes a nice day-trip.
The closest parking for a cache search is at the beginning of the Strada Vicentina at Prosecco. Pass the climbing cliffs and be careful to take the appropriate path.
