Geocache Description:

This is my 25th cache! To celebrate that fact, I thought that I’d do a little something special…like make a puzzle cache that is a little harder than usual! Instead of having to come up with only ten out of the fifteen co-ordinates, you will need to come up with all fifteen! But don’t worry, the questions are not that hard. And if you have any trouble, just check with Google or Wikipedia. ;)

This puzzle cache I have themed around Tennessee state history, with an emphasis on Chattanooga in the Civil War. Nearby to this cache is a wonderful little Confederate Cemetery. While you do not have to visit this cemetery at all to complete this cache (if you had to, that’d actually be illegal), I do highly recommend visiting this forgotten cemetery, and spending a thoughtful moment or two remembering what happened nearly a century and a half ago.

Okay. Back to how to find this cache! As always, the listed co-ords above are completely bogus. Here are the questions, and if you answer them all correctly, you will successfully find the actual cache. The co-ordinates are as follows:

BONUS QUESTION! The following and last question may be a little harder. Therefore, if you are having trouble answering it, check the additional hint for a link which will give you the answer!

O. What Confederate general led 30,000 troops from Alabama to Kentucky in 1862?

1-Jefferson Davis
2-Ulysses S. Grant
0-Braxton Bragg

I’d like to point out that many of the soldiers that the above general led in 1862 are buried in the nearby Confederate Cemetery that I have mentioned. While wooded markers were originally set up to remember each soldiers’ name, rank, and organization, the markers have since disintegrated and most of the soldiers’ names and personal details are now unknown.

I must say, I feel very lucky to live in a town where so much important history has happened. Chattanooga was a vital crossroads of both river and rail in the 1860’s. Manufacturing was big business, and the city was kind of a “gateway to Georgia”, that state having even more of the Confederacy’s manufacturing plants. For these reasons and more, Chattanooga was a very “attractive” target for President Abraham Lincoln and his Union Army. Union Generals William Rosecrans, William Sherman, and finally Ulysses Grant himself all commanded the Union Army at Chattanooga, engaging the Confederates in a series of important battles throughout the fall of 1863. Confederate forces finally surrendered the city late in November, and this decisive Union victory made way for the capture of Atlanta and Sherman’s March to the Sea, both of which occurred in 1864. Put simply, the success at Chattanooga was “key” in the Union winning the Civil War.

It’s up to you to decide if there are any hidden clues in the above paragraph! As for finding the actual cache (not far away at all), the find shouldn’t be hard for just about any cacher except an absolute beginner. Bring your own writing device, use stealth as always, and please replace as found. There is an authentic Tennessee State Quarter placed in the cache for the First-to-Find!
