Geocache Description:

A small country cemetery dedicated in 1863 by Catherine and David Rexford, who chose the site because there were already a few graves found there on property owned by them. It was known as the "Rexford Cemetery" until around 1940 when it became called "Brookside Cemetery".

As you enter the cemetery, the open space to the left is an area of mass unmarked graves, many of them children who died from flu (1912-1918). Since they couldn't keep up with making caskets, the children were buried in baskets made in a basket shop that was on the west side of the village of Gaines.

Above the North fence-line was a Indian burial ground no sign of which remains.

PARKING: You can pull up into the cemetery, but there is no turn around. You may want to either park at the bottom of the switch-back and walk a short distance up the hill, or back all the way out as it is often wet and out of respect for the unmarked graves. Cemetery road likely not plowed in winter, but you can easily walk in on the road - short walk from Route 6.
