Pevensey Levels are an incredibly important wetland, and the RSPB is full of praise for the adjacent farmers who manage the land so sympathetically that many rare species are once again seen in this area. For example, the Levels are Sussex's foremost site for Yellow Wagtails (image) with 19 pairs found in the 2009 survey.
During the 2009 survey, good populations of priority farmland birds such as linnet and meadow pipit were found, along with a healthy population of singing skylarks, reed bunting, sedge and reed warbler. Five types of heron were also seen, including rare species such as night heron (background image)and cattle egret.
I long to be able to recognise and understand birdlife but I am truly hopeless. However, I come here with binoculars and the bird book and just stand at the gate and wait - and even I have spotted the beautiful and rare visitors from this quiet vantage point. Beware though - I find myself losing hours just standing here.
