Maggie Jean Chestnut - Businesswoman (Chestnut Canoe Company)

Daughter of Henry Chestnut, Maggie Jean learned the family canoe business after completing a BA at the UNB (1927) and an MA at U of T (1929). Maggie Jean rose through the ranks, eventually becoming President of the Chestnut Canoe Company. She served as President of the Associated Alumnae of UNB and became a member of the University Senate. Built in 1894 for the widowed Mrs. Fraser, this Queen Anne style house was sold to the Bank of Montreal in 1900. Lord Beaverbrook purchased the house in 1948, bequeathing it to the UNB Associated Alumnae for use as a women’s residence. In 1949, the new, expanded residence opened, named in honour of Maggie Jean Chestnut. Maggie died shortly before this residence opened.
