Mary Grannan - Children’s author and broadcaster
Known affectionately as “Just Mary,” Mary Grannan was an international radio personality and children’s author. After graduating from Provincial Normal School in 1917, she taught at the Devon Superior School. Her career in radio began on the local station, CFNB, when the Canadian Teacher’s Federation used the air waves during the first National Education Week in 1935. With the success of her radio show Just Mary, Grannan was offered a position with CBC in 1939. During her career, she penned thousands of radio and tv scripts for children’s programming. Mary Grannan is remembered for creating the memorable character, Maggie Muggins.
Mary resided at 325 Brunswick Street, where an historic plaque can be found on the house.
The location of this cache is on the grounds of the CBC broadcasting centre where Mary delivered her program for many years.
