A cattle guard is a grid, usually of parallel metal bars, set at ground level covering a depression in a gateway or road. It serves as a barrier to cattle while allowing passage of vehicles and pedestrian. The gaps between the bars are wide enough for the animals legs to pass through, causing the animal to be reluctant to set foot on them. Occasionally they fail due to ingenious animals. Sometimes an optical illusion will serve the purpose.
