White Rock

The gateway to wild New Zealand. The peaks of the Two Thumbs (8350 and 8220 ft)take centre stage as a backdrop to the braided river system of the Rangitata River bellow. To your right is the Mount Harper conservation area. In the 1930's five acres of ice skating rinks were located at the base of this mountain. I believe a swing bridge was erected each year to allow access to the ice-rink. To your left is the Ben McLeod Range. In 1878 opals were discovered at the top of this range, just to the east of Stew Point Saddle. In 1897 the Record Reign Opal mining company was issued a licence to mine here. The head of the mining company was arrested for larceny shortly after. Apparently the opals were planted. Opaline rock does exist in the area but unfortunately is of no commercial value. The Rangitata is formed from the confluence of the glacial fed rivers of the Havelock, Clyde and the Lawrence. On the left of the valley is Mesopotamia and on the right Erewhon. (nowhere spelled backwards). If you walk for three days up this valley you will come to the Garden of Eden. A massive ice plateau 10 miles across.
