Morris County Outdoor Education center ~ Summer

The Great Swamp was created approximately 15,000 years ago when the melting waters of the Wisconsin Glacier poured into the natural basin of this area and created prehistoric Lake Passaic. When the lake eventually drained northward, it formed the Passaic River, leaving behind the rich soils from which the Great Swamp flora would grow.

The Great Swamp is not entirely swampland but rather a mixture of red maple swamps, grass marshes, dry woods and meadows. It is the intermingling of these habitats and the diversity of its terrain that gives the Great Swamp its unique character and allows it to support a rich variety of plant and animal life.

Morris County Outdoor Education center ~ Winter

The Morris County Park Commission maintains approximately 45 acres on the eastern edge of the Great Swamp NWR at the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center and offers a wide variety of nature programs for all ages year round as well as 2 miles of nature trails open to the public from dawn to dusk. The Visitors Center is open 7 days a week from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.morrisparks.net or call 973-635-6629.
