Cache is a 30-cal Ammo Box found just off of the Jack's Knob Trail (FS #45), south of Brasstown Bald, just outside of the Brasstown Wilderness Area on Wolfpen Ridge. This cache is a tribute to the most useful of items. . Duck Tape, and to its greatest proponent, the famous Red Green.
Do you need to repair a hole in your hiking shoe? Do your glasses need some extra support on the bridge of your nose? Do you have a rip in your thermal underwear? Do you need to quickly make a new wallet from scratch? What better thing to perform these tasks than the universal tool of handymen & handywomen everywhere. . duck tape. As the posterchild of duck tape, Red Green, would say: "If it ain't broke, you're not trying", hence the need for this adhesive masterpiece. This cache was placed with the idea that you might need some of this magical stuff while you are hiking from Brasstown Bald to Jack's Gap (or vice versa). The ammo box originally contained a variety of duck tape along with a log book and a few other trinkets. Feel free to take a roll of duck tape, or even just a few pieces. You don't have to swap it for more duck tape (any swag will do), but if you really want to get into the spirit of it, feel free to add more duck tape, duck tape accessories, or items made of duck tape to the cache, especially if the supply gets low.
From the Brasstown Bald parking area (there is a parking fee of $5 per person), take the Jack's Knob (FS#45) trail south for around 0.4 miles. There will be an elevation increase of around 200 ft. When you are about 90 ft from the cache, you will need to go off of the trail until you are slightly on the east side of Wolfpen Ridge. If you hike up from the trail parking off of Highway 180, you will have around a 1.8 mile hike, but a substantial elevation increase of around 1500 ft. Once you find the cache, please rehide it well to avoid discovery by trail campers & critters. Please do not put any "smelly" items in, like food, lotions, etc.
FTF gets their pick of a free duck tape roll without the need to swap swag!
Now the question everyone is asking. . is it Duck Tape or Duct Tape. Of course, the most popular brand of this tape is the Duck brand, but it is thought that its name dates at least to WWII because this type of tape was commonly used among soldiers and was called cotton "duck", a waterproof (like "water off a duck's back") canvas tape that many WWII veterans continued to use after the war, mainly for repairing ductwork (hence the confusion). As early as 1945, "cotton duck tape" was being advertised for government surplus sale. However, there may have been an earlier reference to duck tape. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, in 1902, has a reference to the "100,000 yards of cotton duck tape" used to wrap the cables on the Brooklyn Bridge. No matter where you stand on the Duct/Duck etymological controversy, please enjoy this cache and the surrounding beautiful Wolfpen Ridge area.
In compliance with Forest Service regulations, this cache is clearly marked with the name of the cache, the cache #, its waypoint, and the e-mail address of the cache owner.
CONGRATULATIONS TO EEK37 AS FTF!!!
