Dmitri Mendeleev's Favourite Place (Southland) Mystery Cache
Dmitri Mendeleev's Favourite Place (Southland)
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
The cache is NOT at the co-ordinates listed above.
This cache asks you to solve some puzzles based around chemical elements.
To solve the puzzles easily, you will need the Periodic Table of Elements and an understanding of atoms, protons, electrons, neutrons, atomic numbers and atomic weight.
Dmitri Mendeleev is credited with making and developing the Periodic Table. He achieved this by arranging the then known 63 elements into ascending order of atomic weight.
The cache is hidden at:
S FH° CB.ABF'
E KHJ° KG.BFF'
Where…
A = The amount of neutrons in a single Hydrogen atom.
K = The amount of electrons in a single Francium atom, divided by the amount of protons in a single Francium atom.
C = The amount of protons in a single atom of Cadmium, divided by 24.
E = The atomic number of Hydrogen, plus the amount of electrons and protons in a single Hydrogen atom.
F = The amount of neutrons in a single Krypton atom, divided by the amount of neutrons in a single atom of Magnesium.
D = The atomic number of the element with the symbol "B".
H = The amount of neutrons in a single Europium atom, minus 83.
G = The amount of neutrons in a single Aluminium atom, divided by 2.
J = The amount of neutrons in a single Tin atom, minus the amount of neutrons in a single atom of the element with the symbol "Ag".
B = (The amount of electrons in a single atom of Yttrium, minus the amount of protons in Krypton) multiplied by 3.
Where you need to use the Atomic Weight, round it to the nearest whole number.
Number of Protons = Atomic Number
Number of Electrons = Number of Protons = Atomic Number
Number of Neutrons = Atomic Weight - Atomic Number
An example would be for krypton:
Number of Protons = Atomic Number = 36
Number of Electrons = Number of Protons = Atomic Number = 36
Number of Neutrons = Atomic Weight - Atomic Number = 84 - 36 = 48
The cache is a small black screw top container. Accuracy was to 5m when hidden.
Contained a logbook with "Muggle" note and two pencils when hidden.
We would appreciate you mentioning in your log the fact that "NERDS ROCK!"
