Historical Information:
Columbia became a major rail hub due to its central location and the ability to connect to many other cities like Augusta, Charleston, Camden, and Charlotte. The South Carolina Railroad company was the main provider of the area, but other lines came through the area. As the war approached rail lines increased at a rapid rate because the railroad was the quickest way to move troops and supplies. Columbia held many strategic targets like the Confederate printing plant, manufacturing plants, and the Palmetto iron works, but none were as important to Sherman as shutting down the rails to ensure the war would not spark anew.
