Across the Granite
A short hike from the Arabia Mountain PATH brings you onto the Mile Rock Trail, where the landscape begins to open and change under your feet. What starts as a wooded walk gradually gives way to exposed granite, stretching out in wide, rolling slabs.
This area, known as Mile Rock for well over a century, is part of the larger granite outcrop system that defines Arabia Mountain. Here, the terrain feels almost otherworldly. Shallow depressions in the rock collect rainwater, forming temporary pools that support delicate plant life. Patches of moss and lichen cling to the surface, thriving in thin soils where little else can grow.
Depending on the season, this space can feel very different. After rain, water gathers in the low spots and reflects the sky. In warmer months, the rock radiates heat while small pockets of green persist in protected areas. In cooler seasons, the open views and quiet surroundings give this place a calm, almost reflective atmosphere.
Because of the wide, exposed rock and limited shade, conditions here can change quickly. Summer heat can feel more intense on the stone, while cooler months can bring wind across the open surface. It is always a good idea to plan ahead, bring water, and be mindful of the weather before heading out.
Please stay on durable surfaces as you explore and avoid stepping on moss, lichen, or seasonal plant growth that depends on this fragile environment.

Getting There
Parking is available at the Arabia Mountain Nature Center on Klondike Road. From there, take the Mile Rock Trail directly, or follow the paved PATH south and connect to the trail nearby.
Stay on the trail until you are close to the cache area. When stepping off trail, take care to avoid sensitive vegetation and fragile rock features.
