Het Windas

Het Windas is een buurtschap in de gemeente Schiedam, die zijn naam gaf aan de straat Windas en de Windasbrug over de Poldervaart.

Het windas

Een windas is een soort lier die steunt op twee poten van hout, steen of metaal.

Een windas wordt gebruikt bij een waterput om emmers water,
met behulp van een touw of ketting,
naar boven te halen, of op schepen het anker op te hijsen of op korenmolens
 om het maalgoed op te hijsen, waar het een luias wordt genoemd.

Ook in zilver-, koper-, goud- en kolenmijnen werden vroeger windassen gebruikt om het weggehakte gesteente naar boven te halen.

In magazijnen vergemakkelijkt het windas het verticaal transporten van goederen.

De ton waarop het touw wordt verzameld, kan horizontaal of verticaal zijn opgesteld; in het laatste geval heet het werktuig ook wel een kaapstander.

Volgens de legende werd de Heilige Erasmus met zo een windas doodgefolterd.
Men draaide boven zijn buik de darmen uit zijn lichaam.

Een windas werd ook gebruikt bij het laden van grote kruisbogen.
De eerste kruisbogen bestonden uit hout en konden met de hand gespannen worden,
 maar naarmate er grotere uitvoeringen werden ontwikkeld met onderdelen van been en staal,
 konden zelfs de sterkste schutters de boog niet meer handmatig spannen.

Met een kleine kruisboog konden tot vier pijlen per minuut worden afgeschoten,
 een grote boog haalde een frequentie van een per minuut;
 de schutter werd dan tijdens het laden beschermd door het schild van een schildknaap.

Windassen werden ook toegepast in stormrammen.




Als het regent kan het hier drassig zijn, dus als je kaplaarzen hebt is dit aan te bevelen.
Parkeer je auto op het waypoint, hiervandaan is het 500 meter lopen.
Met de fiets kun je een stuk verder komen, je zult dan het laatste stuk van 100 meter moeten lopen.
In de cache is ruimte voor wat coins en/of een kleine TB, neem zelf je pen mee.

Het Windas

Het Windas is a hamlet in the municipality of Schiedam, who gave its name to the street and the bridge over the Poldervaart canal.

A “windas” is a windlass.
It is a sort of lyre which rests on two legs of wood, stone or metal.

It is used in wells to surface water buckets, using a rope or chain, or on ships to hoist the anchor or corn mills to hoist the corn grains.
They were also formerly used in silver, copper, gold and coal mines to surface the rock debris.
Warehouses use them to facilitate the vertical transport of goods.

The barrel where the rope is collected, can be positioned horizontally or vertically; vertically placed, it is called a capstan.
According to legend, such a windlass was used to torture the the Holy Erasmus to death.
They wound his intestines around a windlass from a cut just above his abdomen.

A windlass was also used for loading large crossbows.
The first crossbows were made ??out of wood and could be stretched by hand,
but as larger models were developed with components of bone and steel, even the strongest shooters could no longer arc the bow with manual power.
With a small crossbow, four arrows per minute could be fired, a large bow reached a rate of one per minute; while charging, the gunman would be protected through the shell of a squire.

Windlasses were also used in battering-rams.


Be aware that this location can be very soggy and muddy when it rains, so Wellingtons or rubber boots will come in handy.
You can park your car at the waypoint, it’s a 500 meter walk from here.
When you travel by bike, the final walk will only be about 100 meters.
