Le Monument de la Renaissance africaine est une imposante
structure haute de 52 mètres en bronze et cuivre1 à Ouakam, une
commune d'arrondissement de Dakar, sur l'une des deux collines
volcaniques coniques qui surplombent la capitale sénégalaise, les
Mamelles, la plus haute portant déjà le phare des Mamelles.
Le monument représente un couple et son enfant, dressés vers le
ciel. Il a été officiellement inauguré le 3 avril 2010 lors des
cérémonies du cinquantenaire de l'indépendance du Sénégal.
Construction: L'ouvrage, dont les travaux ont débuté en 2002, a
coûté entre 92 et 15 milliards de francs CFA3 (15 à 23 millions
d'euros). Il fait partie des grands projets du président Abdoulaye
Wade qui le veut « dignité du continent ». Il s'agit de montrer au
travers d'une famille dressée vers le ciel, l'homme portant son
enfant sur son biceps et tenant sa femme par la taille, « une
Afrique sortant des entrailles de la terre, quittant
l'obscurantisme pour aller vers la lumière ». Le monument figure en
effet une famille africaine résolument tournée vers le
nord-ouest.
La statue aurait été conçue par le sculpteur d'origine roumaine
Virgil Magherusan (d'après l'article "Wade, le président et sa
statue" publié dans la revue "Le Temps / Culture" - "«Il est né à
Bucarest, diplômé de l’Institut des beaux-arts en 1979. A
l’époque, il servait d’assistant pour des artistes qui
voulaient fondre des pièces colossales, souvent des commandes du
régime Ceausescu. Il s’est taillé au fil des ans une petite
réputation de sculpteur monumental, au point, après son exil en
France, d’être nommé «sculpteur officiel de l’Armée

La conception du monument a été confiée à l'architecte
sénégalais Pierre Goudiaby Atepa, déjà l'auteur – notamment
– de la Porte du Troisième millénaire qui surplombe la route
de la Corniche. L'œuvre a été dessinée par le président Wade
qui en détient le droit d'auteur de 35 %, mais l'œuvre avait
été initiée par le célèbre artiste sénégalais Ousmane Sow qui s'est
depuis retiré du projet suite a une mésentente avec Abdoulaye
Wade2.
The monument is a couple and their child, drawn up towards the
sky. It was officially opened on 3 April 2010 during the
celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the independence of
Senegal .
Construction:
The book, whose work began in 2002, cost between 9 and 15 billion
francs CFA (15 to 23 million euros). It is one of the major
projects of President Abdoulaye Wade who wants to "dignity of the

published in "The Time / Culture" - "" He was born in Bucharest, a
graduate Institute of Fine Arts in 1979. At the time, he served as
an assistant for artists who wanted to merge parts colossal, often
orders of the Ceausescu regime. He has earned over the years a
reputation monumental sculptor, to the point, after his exile in
France, to be called "official sculptor of the French Army '" -

The design of the monument was entrusted to the architect
Senegalese Pierre Goudiaby Atepa , already the author - in
particular - the Third Millennium Gate overlooking the Corniche
road. The work was designed by Wade who owns the copyright of 35%,
but the work was initiated by the renowned Senegalese artist
Ousmane Sow has since withdrawn the project after a disagreement
with Abdoulaye Wade .
