Geocache Description:

This Iron Age Hillfort was in use from 600 BC till about 400 BC and occupies a striking position at the end of a ridge overlooking Wendover and the Vale of Aylesbury. In the day there would have been a 12-foot wooden palisade around the perimeter of this large settlement, protected by a single rampart.

An univallate contour Hillfort that covers an area of about 7 hectares (17 ½ acres) and is oval/pear shaped in design. Although described as Iron Age it was possibly built on top of an earlier Late Bronze Age settlement. No significant archaeological digs have been made on the site, but an excavation was carried out in 1964 where a section was cut out of the bank on the south side of the fort, the main goal of which was to fix a location of the main entrance and to age the Hillfort. A clearly defined occupation layer was found which yielded; pottery, animal bones, flints and a layer of carbon deposit. The pottery was dated 600-400BC and was of a coarse texture with flint grit, some of which had fingertip decoration. 3 post holes were found during this excavation and the largest of which was 15 inches in diameter which might have been a gate post.

Boddington Hillfort is a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM) no.19085 and due to work of a volunteer conservation group improving interpretation of the site it has been removed from the English Heritage ‘At Risk Register’.

Most visitors to Wendover woods wouldn’t realise the presence of a Hillfort due to it being overgrown with mature deciduous trees and conifers, with a dense scrubby understorey. All that’s visible from the footpath which surrounds the Hillfort are the very pronounced large earthwork banks (which in places reach 13 feet high) and a ditch which is best viewed from the east side.

The Cache:

Obviously the cache hasn’t been placed on the Hillfort itself, but just off a cycle path to the south. The cache container is a large camouflage box filled with all sorts of goodies, you shouldn't need the hint and please hide better than you found it.

The education is for the big kids and the cache (treasure) is for the littlens, so please uphold geocaching rule #1. If you take something from the geocache, leave something of equal or greater value.

Thanks and enjoy!!!!
