Another peaceful spot close to the water! Be warned - some climbing required! (But no wading/swimming this time!)
Site of the former Hakalau Plantation Company Sugar Mill, this spot at the bottom of Hakalau gulch is now a small state park complete w/ landscaping and picnic tables.
Years ago, the Waimea bank of the stream was a favorite spot for our family. (The Hilo-side bank, where the park is now was mostly overgrown sugar mill ruins.) Dad used to hunt for prawns much further upstream, and us kids would often swim and play at the mouth of the stream. Note the smooth river stones? In between lunchtime and more swimming, we'd often skip stones across the stream, the winner being whoever could skip one all the way to the other bank. As I demonstrated to Akemi, her old man's still got the technique!
Jumping off of the bridge was great fun too, and that brings us to the hiding spot. The coordinates might be a bit off - I could barely get 3 sats w/ the gulch and bridge overhead. The cache is a plastic Mason jar magnetically hidden somewhere on the bridge. See the hint if you want the exact pillar. Safety note: It's not TOO high - maybe 6 to 8 feet above the concrete supports.
Please be careful w/ screwing the lid back on - Akemi pointed out to me that securing it properly is tricky! If we have too many issues, I'll change out the container. (At least I remembered a pencil this time!)
