Geocache Description:

Western North Carolina's oldest known standing frame house.

Get some info in a couple of places on the Allison-Deaver grounds and then take a short stroll to the cache.

After finding a recent OzGuff cache, I decided to copy imitate him and bring you all to another stop on the NC Civil War Trails. Just think of it as flattery, OzGuff.
The listed coordinates are for the Allison-Deaver House itself.

You will need to get most of the info from the information board, but you will also need a little info from the barn located nearby.

Parking is available right beside the information board, but you can also gain access to the grounds from the nearby Taco Bell/Wal-Mart parking lot. If you do park there, the easiest route is to cut across from the drive-through window at the Taco Bell. And although this spot has a history of bushwhackers, there isn't any bushwhacking required.

The actual coordinates of the physical cache are:

N 35° 16.ABC

W 082° 42.DEF

A = Sum of the digits of the day of the month when the bushwhackers shot and killed William Deaver
B = Last Digit in the year that Benjamin Allison sold the house to William Deaver
C = Year in which James Deaver was promoted to Lieutenant: 2nd digit MINUS the 3rd MINUS the 4th
D = Number of terms Deaver served as State Representative MINUS terms served as State Senator
E = At the Barn, you will find a year on the weather vane. When aligned properly to read: 2nd Digit MINUS the 4th PLUS the 3rd
F = Date James enlisted in the NC infantry: First digit of the day PLUS last digit of the year

CHECKSUM: A + B + C + D + E + F = XY; X + Y = 4

Please rehide well after finding.

Allison-Deaver House is open for tours May through the 3rd week in October, Saturdays 10-4 and Sundays 1-4. Admission $5 adults, families $15, children under 6 free.

The Allison-Deaver House was never structurally altered for extensive electric wiring, plumbing or for heating and insulation. So you can see the original home with working fireplaces and the original paneling.

There is also a legend that Davy Crockett visited the house. Davy Crockett and William Deaver both married Patton women so the story might be true. There is a Buncombe County document recorded in 1833 (found in 1995) that shows Col. D. Crockett and William Deaver signed a notarized debt together.
