Cornwall's first 100 plus cache series. There's a fair mix of
footpaths and very minor roads - with quite a lot of up and
down
sections. Dogs should be no problem, buggies/prams and
wheelchairs
will struggle - lots. Some stunning views so bring a camera.
There
are several stiles on the way round.
The Choughly Saint's HALO Cache
Series
It’s based on parts of “The Saints Way”, a
circuit of some 22 miles, taking in coastline, moorland, a tor and
a selection of delightful towns and villages - with many spots to
stop for tea or if you’re that way inclined there’s a
lovely selection of fine Cornish Pubs on the way round.

Luxulyan is probably most famous for the
granite that outcrops in its district. The rock was intensively
worked (until fairly recently) for local and more distant projects
for more than 200 years. One particular type of altered granite
known as luxullianite is found in the area and was used for the
Duke of Wellington's sarcophagus in St Paul's Cathedral. A steep
valley cut by the River Par contains a major concentration of early
19th century industrial remains, including a combined Aqueduct and
Viaduct. The valley was designated a World Heritage Site in 2006.
The Atlantic Coast Line from Par to Newquay runs up the Luxulyan
Valley and there is a station at Luxulyan. A bus service connects
the village with St Austell and Lostwithiel. St Sulien, or Sulian,
was abbot in Luxulyan during the sixth century. Sulien is a Welsh
variant of the name "Julian," but has also been interpreted as
being derived from the Welsh sul, meaning "sun" + geni, meaning
"born" - Sulien being the name of a Celtic solar deity. The church
in the village may have been dedicated to him originally, but it is
now dedicated to Saints Ciricius (Cyr, Cyriacus, Quiricus) and
Julitta. The parish church, originally Norman, was entirely rebuilt
in granite in the 15th century. The Blackmoor Stannary, centred at
nearby Hensbarrow Beacon, kept its records stored in the
church. |
