Geocache Description:

Welcome To Bay Plaza Shopping Center. This was originally home to "The World's Largest Outdoor Family Entertainment Center", Freedomland USA Amusement Park.

On June 18, 1960, Freedomland was dedicated in a ceremony with 5,000 people in attendance. The following day, June 19, the park officially opened with 65,000 visitors. That same evening, The Ed Sullivan Show presented a promotional tour of the park and referred to it as Disneyland's equal on the East Coast. On June 20, the second day of operation, Freedomland was forced to stop selling tickets because of traffic jams leading to the park. Sadly it was short lived and only lasted 4 yrs. It closed at the end of the 1964 season when it failed to make a profit.

Since Freedomland was before my time, I always imagined the exit off the Hutchinson River Parkway South(4N) being the approach to the one time wonderland of the eastcoast. Now it is home to a large outdoor shopping mall, which is still growing. So while you enjoy some shopping stop and try to imagine the rides and attractions... and grab a cache while you're at it.

The cache is a bison tube. It is hidden pretty well but please remember this is a busy thoroughfare so use some stealth. Otherwise it should be a quick P&G. There is $1 for the FTF. BYOP.
