Deaver creek was incorrectly labeled Beaver Creek by TXDOT, when the signage was placed on highway 82. There is an airport named after Beaver creek, just off Old Southmayd Rd (9XS2) before the owners found out the truth. Deaver creek, one of a few tributaries in the U.S. that flow from south to north. Deaver creek rises 6 miles northwest of Dorchester, Tx (33 42 N, 96 47 W) and runs 13 miles where it flows into Big Mineral creek (33 42 N, 96 47 W) just before it dumps into Lake Texoma. This arm of Lake Texoma was established in 1946 as Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge encompasses 11,320 acres which 6,500 acres of uplands, 4,000 acres of open water, 500 acres of wetlands, and 400 acres of crop lands. The primary purpose of the refuge is to protect and manage habitat for refuge and breeding grounds for migratory birds and other wildlife. A total of 338 species of birds have been recorded since its establishment. This area was the hunting territory of several native tribes including Caddo, Wichita, Comanche, and Kiowas. The Refuge has a great new visitors center located at 6465 Refuge Rd, Pottsboro TX 75076 (903) 786-2826.
