ROCK LOVE - TB HOTEL, a Park & Grab for TB, CD & SWAG exchange.
This geocache has many layers of meaning: ROCK 'n ROLL music, ROCK (the solid mineral from the earth), and the LOVE of Geocaching. It is located along the original route of Old Hwy 51, traversing up the center of Wisconsin, passing through all the small towns, gas stations, stores and watering holes along the way, from south of Madison, to north of Hurley, and beyond.
The building, established around 1933, Red Granite Pub & Grill, closed January 2012. Inside is a long countertop and turntable made from a slab of RED solid ROCK mined from a local GRANITE quarry nearby. For years, this popular pub & grill welcomed visitors, bicyclists, auto travelers and families year-round, food, drinks, outdoor and indoor sports and events like volleyball, pool games, karaoke, holiday parties, Friday fish fry, motorcycle rallys, Fall Ride, burnouts, live music, a pit-stop for snowmobilers on Route 19, and more.
Being musicians and fans of Rock ‘n Roll, and living a couple miles away, we saw the need for a TB Hotel between Wausau and Merrill. Feel free to take and exchange TBs (Travel Bugs), swag, or any spare or special music CD you may have around your home or auto. As always, if you take something, please replace it with something equal or better than what you take. If you take a TB (trackable Travel Bug), please promise to LOG it on www.geocaching.com so the owner can watch its travels.
This cache is a large ammo can, is outdoors and available 24/7 to find. Use stealth to safeguard the location of the cache. After you sign log and exchange items, be sure to replace the cache exactly where you found it.
Granite ( /'græn?t/) is a common and widely occurring type of intrusive, felsic, igneous rock. Granite usually has a medium- to coarse-grained texture.
Occasionally some individual crystals (phenocrysts) are larger than the groundmass, in which case the texture is known as porphyritic. A granitic rock with a porphyritic texture is sometimes known as a porphyry. Granites can be pink to gray in color, depending on their chemistry and mineralogy. By definition, granite is an igneous rock with at least 20% quartz by volume. Granite differs from granodiorite in that at least 35% of the feldspar in granite is alkali feldspar as opposed to plagioclase; it is the alkali feldspar that gives many granites a distinctive pink color. Outcrops of granite tend to form tors and rounded massifs. Granites sometimes occur in circular depressions surrounded by a range of hills, formed by the metamorphic aureole or hornfels. Granite is usually found in the continental plates of the Earth's crust.
Granite is nearly always massive (lacking internal structures), hard and tough, and therefore it has gained widespread use as a construction stone. The average density of granite is between 2.65[1] and 2.75 g/cm3, its compressive strength usually lies above 200 MPa, and its viscosity near STP is 3-6 • 1019 Pa·s.[2] Melting temperature is 1215 - 1260 °C.[3]
The word granite comes from the Latin granum, a grain, in reference to the coarse-grained structure of such a crystalline rock.
