Geocache Description:

Halfway House

This hotel was established in 1872 and is another unique and hitoric pub.
Such pub is regarded as the oldest operating bar in Kimberley.
It started off as a hotel and derived from being on the main throughout between the then separate boroughs of Kimberey and Beaconsfield.

The Liquor License

Cecil John Rhodes arrived in Durban in 1870 and went to brother Herbert's cotton farm at Umkomaas, but after nearly a year he joined Herbert as a diamond
digger in Kimberley. His first fortune came from pumping the water out the mine, he had made a
subtantial amount by selling ice cubes.
Cecil John Rhodes enjoyed a drink or two and was always in too much of a rush to get off his horse to
enter the Half for his drink.
To avoid this problem he passed on a law allowing patrons to be served on horseback o rin their carts outside the hotel without entering the permises.
The Halfway House was already serving alholich beverages by the middle of the 1870's.
A toll station - one of seven - was opposite the hotel and people entering or leaving Kimberley would up and waiting in the ubearable heat. As the licence
had full liquor license privileges he could indeed serve people outside The Half.

The Truth

This is quite correct. Some years ago there were three, two in Kimberley, and one in Australia. The
Australians and the Kimberlite Hotel have both since closed, and the Half is now believed to be the only drive-in bar in the world.

Locals come here and are always game for a good chat and sharing gossip.
The bar serves good food and drinks at reasonable prices.
Do make a stop at any time. It is worth it.
