Gilmorton is of Saxon origin. The name Gilmorton may come from 'guilden', translated as golden fields of wheat. 'Morton' is the Saxon term for enclosure or homestead. At the time of the Doomsday Book in 1086 the population was around 140, today it is just under 900. Traditionally the local economy was based on agriculture, many of the original houses being built by farmers, there are still many working farms in and around the village.
From the lane you can see the 4 new wind Turbines, but if you look the opposite direction (On Windmill Lane) you can see an old Windmill it does not have the dome or blades on any more but is shows that this area has been harvesting energy from wind for quite some time.
Parking Can Be found at Either end of the Bridleway or in the Village, which is a short walk away.
