Geocache Description:

The cache is a small screw top bison container hooked on to the fence post. Please hook the cache back after logging.

A scenic 5 ½ mile (9.5km) series of 14 traditional caches around Castle Acre and Newton, it’s fairly flat walk that will involve passing through some small gates, one set of steps, and crossing a main road twice. Although there will be an amount of walking along roads, most will have paths. The country paths are well maintained, but one or two are also farm tracks and can be extremely muddy after rain. The trail is not all suitable for wheelchairs or buggies, children will need to be carefully supervised alongside the roads and streams. The walk can be completed in 3 hours if time is pressing, but if you have the time to explore the village pub you can easily spend a full day here. Two ancient buildings dominate the lovely village of Castle Acre, the Norman Castle and the Priory. Both are now in ruins, but they offer a fantastic glimpse into the past and are one of the best examples of a Norman settlement in the country. Visitors to Castle Acre are entranced by the special atmosphere of this medieval walled town, which lies within the outer bailey of an 11th century castle. Castle Acre takes its name from the castle built in the 12th Century by the Normans. Although now only its walls and ramparts remain, it attracts visitors all year round and offers splendid views of the surrounding Norfolk countryside. An ancient gateway arch, called the Bailey Gate, was the north gateway to the medieval town. In addition to the Castle and the Bailey Gate, visitors should see the beautifully maintained Castle Acre Priory, whose walled herb garden and the prior’s lodging give an insight into the life of this once powerful priory. This lovely village also has a cafe and one traditional village pub with another near the road leading into the village. From the car park head South past the castle, or alternatively wander through the castle grounds down to the cache.
