The gate was established to commemorate the visit of George the Fifth of the United Kingdom and Queen Mary in Mumbai, Delhi Durbar first attended in December 1911. Constant over the central hall address:
"Erected to commemorate the landing in India of their Imperial Majesties King Goerge V and Queen Mary on the Second of December MCMXI".
