Just east of the intersection of Philips Rd and Lake Rd and 100 yards north of the bridge across Four Mile Creek are remains of an old embankment or dam. Nearby was the location of a sawmill and gristmill owned by pioneer Caleb Lyon in 1805. Caleb had big ideas of establishing a community in the area and proceeded to make plans for a harbor at the mouth of Four Mile Creek. His plans for a village did not develop fast enough so he abandoned the idea.
What is interesting about all this is that the Marine Maps of the U.S. Government still list the name Lyon’s Point and not Nine Mile Point which it was eventually called since it is 9 miles by water from the mouth of Four Mile Creek to the mouth of the Genesee River.
The Four Mile Creek Preserve is still in its beginning Phase of development and some trails are already made. You will cross a new wooden bridge across a creek and walk along a ridge. Trails will get you close to the cache and you will have to choose a way to get the rest of the way.
