Geocache Description:

Two delightful bits of Glocester history.

Betty The Learned Elephant potato head used to stand in front of the town hall and is now beside the Evans one room schoolhouse. You can also find a geocache in Betty's honor in the center of Chepachet.

This will be an easy cache to find. The biggest challenge will be to retrieve & replace the container without drawing too much attention from the clerks in the town hall watching from their windows.

The area around the schoolhouse was the site on which Hachaliah Bailey pitched his circus tents in 1822 and 1826 and displayed his prize attraction, Betty The Learned Elephant, to awed villagers. Following Betty's death in Chepachet May 25th became "Elephant Day" in Chepachet.

The History of Evans School House:

Evans Schoolhouse was built by Daniel Evans on his Evan Rd. land in Glocester about 1867. Mr. Evans hired teachers for the school and provided them with room and board. The schoolhouse was in use for 70 years with two obligatory entrance/exit doors separating gender. The building eventually returned to the heirs of the original owner and after many years of disuse was moved to his present location. With persistence and perseverance, the school was restored by the Glocester Heritage Society with a grant from the Gregson Foundation so that everyone could enjoy this charming bit of history.
