Geocache Description:

Washington and Lee University has several ruins. The cache is not visible from the road or the Historical Marker and is not in the Liberty Hall Ruins.

Small cache with a few goodies.

Though Washington and Lee traces its origins to Augusta Academy, a preparatory school founded in 1749, we know little about it.

When, in 1782, the Board of Trustees moved the school, now called Liberty Hall Academy, to the outskirts of Lexington on a 100-acre site the first buildings were wood frame. However, in 1793 the trustees hired William Cravens, a stonemason, to construct a main building and a steward's house. That main building was of course, Liberty Hall, the ruins of which still dominate our 18th-century campus and playing fields, just to the west of town.
