Geocache Description:

This cache is placed along the 1/4 mi. trail (not wheelchair compatible) to the overlook of the Elwha River dam site.

The Elwha River Dam is in the process of being removed and the Elwha River being returned to it's natural state. 10 miles further upstream, the Glines Canyon dam is also being removed at the same time. Estimated cost of the removal is projected at 350 million dollars. It will take about three years for the removal of the dams and an estimated 15-20 years for the Elwha River to return to it's pre-dam state. Fish may return to the river only a year after the dams are removed.

The largest dam removal project in U.S. history will reopen more than 70 miles of pristine spawning and rearing habitat in the Elwha River and its tributaries. Salmon populations are predicted to swell from 3,000 to nearly 400,000 as all five species of Pacific salmon return to one of the Pacific Northwest's most productive salmon streams.
