This quick roadside cache is
situated at a scenic low level causeway over the Breede (or
Bree) River on the Slanghoek Road.
This location has "genus
loci" (derived from the Latin for "the spirit of the
place") and is a good place to stop on one's journey to collect
thoughts, have a stretch, and linger to absorb the views. The
Slanghoek Valley road is the shortest route (time-wise) between
Cape Town and Ceres, according to our GPS.
337km long, the Breede River begins its
seaward journey high in the mountains north of Ceres and flows into
the Indian Ocean at Witsand. The Breede and its tributaries
flow through no fewer than eleven dams, and well known attractions
in the Western Cape such as the Bontebok Park and Malgas Pont
owe their existence to the river.
Note:
The causeway may be underwater after heavy rain, and be subject to
flash flooding after rain falls remotely in the catchment area
further inland, so please exercise caution.
Do not attempt a crossing by vehicle
or on foot if the river is in
flood.
