Geocache Description:

Depending upon your approach, this cache will take you through the ORAK ruins, just off the Suffern – Bear Mountain Trail in Harriman State Park. As described by Bill Myles and Daniel Chazin in their book Harriman Trails, ORAK was a mansion on the east side of Jackie Jones Mountain that belonged to George Briggs Buchanan, a vice-president of the Corn Products Refining Co., which made KARO syrup. Buchanan bought the land and built his house in 1923. He named his estate for KARO, which he spelled backwards. The dining room of the house resembled a ship’s cabin, with portholes for windows, and a floor that rocked gently to simulate a ship’s motion. Buchanan died on April 13, 1939, and his heirs sold the property to the Park in 1947. The home, gardens and outbuildings were rented to Park employees until 1973, when the main house and hothouse were demolished. The ruins are extensive and many of the walls and foundations still remain.
The cache lies about 110 feet off the S-BM Trail. A fine view south can be enjoyed here. The cache is NOT part of the ruins so please don’t disturb them. This is our first cache so any constructive criticism is more than welcomed. The cache itself is a 9”x6”x3” loc n loc plastic container filled with a few goodies.
As is the case with all Harriman hikes, wildlife can be encountered here, including Deer, ticks, bear, fox, ticks, snakes, both poisonous and non-poisonous, ticks, birds and ticks.

HAPPY HUNTING!!!
