Geocache Description:

Bald Rock

Australia's Largest Climbable Rock!

The cache is not located at the listed coordinates. It's hidden somewhere outside of the National Park. You'll need to visit the listed coordinates to get some information that will allow you to find the cache though.

Bald Rock National Park is located 45 minutes south of Stanthorpe (or 20 minutes north of Tenterfield) on the Mount Lindesay Highway. Bald Rock is the main feature of the National Park. This dome is 750 metres long and 500 metres wide. It rises 200 metres above the surrounding bushland, and is the largest exposed granite type rock in Australia. The summit is 1277 metres above sea level. In order to find this cache, you'll have to climb to the top of it.

Park at the car park (S28° 50.789 E152° 02.729). From here follow the signs to the Bald Rock Summit. A few minutes in, you'll have a choice to make - you can either take the direct (steep) route up the granite face of Bald Rock or take the more leisurely (but very scenic) 'Bungoona Walk' - which is longer in distance but has an easier terrain. Or do what I do and take the Bungoona Walk up, and the direct walk back. Once you get up on top of the rock, a short stroll following some white markers will take you to the listed coordinates - the summit.

Trigpointers will have something to log at the summit, and the National Parks people have left a visitors book to read and sign up there as well, if you wish. There's also a circular plaque showing the direction and distance of some nearby landmarks and towns. You'll need the information on this plaque to find the actual cache.

The plaque shows the direct distance to some nearby places - you'll need the following info:

A = Last digit of the distance to Boonoo Boonoo Falls
B = Last digit of the distance to Cunninghams Gap
C = First digit of the distance to The Pyramids
X = The only digit of the distance to South Bald Rock
Y = The only digit of the distance to Castle Rock
Z = The first digit of the distance to Stanthorpe

Checksum: A+B+C+X+Y+Z = 25

Once you have the info, explore the rock and head on back to the car park.

The cache is located at:     S28° 50.ABC E152° 05.XYZ

NPWS suggests the walk takes 3 hours up and back - which allows some time to explore. You can grab the cache after you have left the national park. You'll be looking for an ammo can.
