Geocache Description:

Waiakanaloa Wet Cave is one of 3 caves in Ha'ena that were created when the sea level was higher than today. Two of the three caves have water in them, and one, Maniniholo is dry. Waiakanaloa is the end of a lava tube, stretching miles into the mountain. Note that this is not the wet cave you can see from the road, it requires a 5 minute walk up the hill. You might find 4 parking stalls, where the trail begins, otherwise park in the Ke'e Beach overflow parking lot that is across the road.

Kanaloa was one of the 4 major Hawaiian gods, the brother of Kane, god of life. The two were noted for digging sources of drinking water as they toured the various islands. This upper wet cave was dug by them and bears the name Waiakanaloa,"Water made by Kanaloa."

Other legends say it was Pele, the fire goddess who struck the cliff with her staff here when she was searching for a home, but she was met with water and moved to Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Many people swim in the pool, even though there is a sign at the beginning of the trail warning you not to. You may have heard about the "Blue Room" which is a hidden cavern in the back of the pond. Warning: People have drowned swimming into the Blue Room.

Congratulations to h-pipe for a great FTF!
